Eid Milad Un-Nabi Celebrations –

Sunday 8th March 2009

In Sheffield, the Council of Mosques holds an annual celebration to mark Milad Un-Nabi and this year the Sheffield Islamic Centre are really pleased to have hosted the main event on Sunday 8th of March.

Milad Un-Nabi marks the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The celebration falls on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal, which is a month of the Islamic lunar calendar.  The most important part of Eid Milad Un-Nabi is focusing upon the character of the Prophet; on his teachings, sufferings, and how he forgave others.

As well as recounting the Prophet's life, salutations and songs in his praise are recited. In some countries, streets and mosques are decorated and illuminated at night.  Some Muslims donate to charity. Families gather together, feasts are arranged and food is served to guests and the poor.

As part of the event, a procession was held in the local area.  Prayers were held in the Masjid at 1pm followed by a children’s programme, a number of keynote speeches in Urdu and English as well as Asian food which was served to all visitors.
