Special presentation on Palestine and Human Rights
This event will be held in the Madina Community Centre (use the Glover Rd entrance) on Tuesday 6th December 2011 at 7:30pm. Free entry. All welcome!
Sue Beardon will be giving a short presentation, followed by a question and answer session.
Sue was a participant on a programme which involved hundreds of people from 20 countries who have spent three months in placements around the West Bank, Palestine, monitoring human rights, providing a protective presence, supporting non-violent action to end the Israeli occupation, and undertaking advocacy on the issue of the conflict there.
The project is called the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel and is run by the World Council of Churches. The British and Irish delegations are organised by Quaker Peace and Social Witness on behalf of an ecumenical board made up of various Christian organisations, although accompaniers may come from a range of faiths or none.
There are six placements, and Sue herself was based in Yanoun, a tiny village near Nablus in the north of the West Bank. The village is surrounded by illegal Israeli settlements and their outposts and continues to suffer from harassment and violence from settlers.
Her talk focuses on the struggles of people there and in the nearby villages and the Jordan Valley, to withstand settler attacks and also acts carried out by the Israeli army such as house demolitions, arrests and incursions.
The project tries not to take sides in the conflict but is not neutral when it comes to issues of human rights and international humanitarian law, and is critical of Israeli government policy and actions which are seen as breaking these international agreements.
